About Heikhalot Rabbati 25: The Song of the Throne

Heikhalot Rabbati 25 is the song the throne of glory sings, and it is a hundred and more nouns without a main verb.

Praise, melody, triumph, meditation, glad cries, humility, pride, treasured possession, ease, tranquillity, branch, mortification, perfumed, salted: the list runs past the point where an English reader can hold it, which is the effect. Then it resolves into a litany of the king, one and honoured and majestic and aged, helper and humble, holy and pure. The pairing of helper and humble in a catalogue of majesty is not a corruption; divine humility beside divine greatness is a deliberate rabbinic move, and this litany makes it in passing.

The chapter's hardest line is its best. The king is the undoing of every conspiracy of pride and is set firm upon the pillars of splendour, a single antithesis in which the arrogant confederate and are dissolved while what he stands on does not move. He watches in secret places, sees in the depths, looks into the darknesses, and in every place he is there; there is no answering back to his word, and no covert to hide in from before him.

canonical late antique / post-talmudic redaction; pseudepigraphically Tannaitic Hebrew Anonymous (pseudepigraphically ascribed to R. Ishmael and R. Nehunya ben ha-Kanah) tr. Hekhal Targum Project (machine-assisted, provisional)

This edition presents the verbatim Hebrew of the passage beside a fresh English rendering and a critical apparatus. It is a provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor.

The apparatus carries a running commentary, notes on the controlled vocabulary and the rendering chosen for each term, any doctrinally-live ambiguity preserved with both readings, and cross-references to the lexicon. The Hebrew is reproduced verbatim from the Hebrew Wikisource transcription; the standard modern English translation (Kaplan, 1979) is under copyright.

As soon as he stands before the throne of his glory, he opens and says the song that the throne of glory sings each and every day: praise and song and melody, blessing and laudation and hallel and acclamation, thanksgiving and confessions, triumph, music, meditation, rejoicing, exultation, gladness and joy, glad cries, pleasantness, humility, pride, comeliness, truth, righteousness and uprightness, treasured possession, splendour and might, exulting and rejoicing and elevation, and ease and rest and consolation and tranquillity and quiet and peace, serenity, security and goodness and affection and compassion, grace and lovingkindness and beauty of form, delight, majesty, mercy, radiance, brightness, merit, shining, appearing, adornment, brilliance, light, branch, mortification, wonders and deliverance, perfumed, salted, luminary, mightinesses, strengths, awesomenesses, power, height and preciousness, strength, dominion and might, and favour, exaltation and radiance, boldness and valour, and the circle of holiness and purity and cleanness, pride, greatness and kingship, majesty, glory and splendour, to HAHARARI’EL, YHWH God of Israel: a king glorified and crowned in the embroideries of song, crowned in splendour, adorned in majesty and glory and honour, a crown of pride, a crown of terrible things, whose name is sweet to him and whose remembrance is pleasant, and a crown of majesty is his, his splendour is comely, and his palace glorifies him, and his ministers make him pleasant, and upright are his strength and his wonders: King of the kings of kings and God of gods and Lord of lords, exalted in the bonds of kingship, encircled in clouds of brightness, a sinew that is in the branch. “His splendour covered the heavens” (Habakkuk 3:3), and his glory shone forth from on high; from his mouth the deeps were kindled, from his form the skies were sprinkled, and all trees shall rejoice at his word, and the grasses shall sing at his gladness.

Among them: a king beloved and desirable and clean and proud, who is exalted over the proud and prevails over all creatures; splendour to kings and praise to the chosen, humility to the wronged, sweet in the mouth of all who call upon him, sweet to those who wait for his name, good in all his ways, upright in all his deeds, pure in counsel and in knowledge, clear in understanding and in deed, judge of every soul and witness in every matter and judge in every matter, mighty in wisdom and in every mystery, majestic in holiness and in purity.

A king of truth and one; a king pure in his deeds, who sustains his creatures; a king living and enduring; a king who puts to death and brings to life; a king who forms every blessing and prepares every good thing; a king blessed; a king one and honoured and majestic and aged, helper and humble, holy and pure, righteous, true and upright, faithful and strong; a king pre-eminent, who is the undoing of every conspiracy of pride and is set firm upon the pillars of splendour in the chambers of the palace; who watches in secret places and sees in the depths and looks into the darknesses, and in every place, he is there; and there is no answering back to his word, and his desire is not to be turned aside, and there is no place to flee from him, nor any covert to hide from before him.

May you reign for ever, a king merciful and gracious, forgiving and pardoning, who revolves and passes over. May you be glorified in every song, may you be exalted upon the throne of your glory, may you be held precious above all your delight, may you be acclaimed in all glad cries, may you be praised in all praises, may you be lauded in all laudations, may you be magnified for ever, may you be sanctified for everlasting, TOTROSIAI, YHWH God of Israel. YHWH, who is like you, TOTROSIAI, YHWH God of Israel, master of mighty deeds. To you, TOTROSIAI, YHWH God of Israel, shall the throne of your glory give praise; to you shall they give exaltation and abundance of strength and splendour; to you shall they ascribe strength, to you shall they ascribe might, to you shall they renew, to you shall they sing, to you shall they speak, to you shall they bless, to you shall they laud, to you shall they exalt, to you shall they glorify, to you shall they lift up, to you shall they magnify, to you shall they honour, to you shall they praise, to you shall they acclaim, to you shall they sanctify, to you, TOTROSIAI, YHWH God of Israel. Your ministers shall crown you with crowns and shall sing to you a new song and shall make you king for ever and ever, and you shall be called One for ever and ever; for you are YHWH God of Israel, a mighty man of valour and abundant to save, a God wise for your dominion, wise for your kingship. Blessed are You, YHWH, wise in mysteries and Lord of hidden things, amen and amen.
