About Heikhalot Rabbati 23: The Guardians of the Seventh Gate

Heikhalot Rabbati 23 discloses the names withheld since chapter 17, and stages the disclosure as an event.

The guardians of the six lower gates may be named and touched; the guardians of the seventh cannot be, because each bears the name of the King of the world. Nehunya has never expounded them. When the company insists, he has them stand, and instructs that as each name leaves his mouth they are to kneel and fall on their faces, so the roster is delivered into a room going down in waves while the scribes stay upright and write.

ANAFI'EL, who opens the seventh gate, is explained by an etymology the English cannot carry: his name holds anaf, branch, and it is the branch of the crown of crowns on his head that covers the chambers of Aravot. The text then applies to him a verse spoken of the Creator, "His splendour covered the heavens" (Habakkuk 3:3), and immediately restrains itself: a servant called by the name of his master. That single qualification is the corpus doing its own theology, and it is why this chapter matters more than its list.

canonical late antique / post-talmudic redaction; pseudepigraphically Tannaitic Hebrew Anonymous (pseudepigraphically ascribed to R. Ishmael and R. Nehunya ben ha-Kanah) tr. Hekhal Targum Project (machine-assisted, provisional)

This edition presents the verbatim Hebrew of the passage beside a fresh English rendering and a critical apparatus. It is a provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor.

The apparatus carries a running commentary, notes on the controlled vocabulary and the rendering chosen for each term, any doctrinally-live ambiguity preserved with both readings, and cross-references to the lexicon. The Hebrew is reproduced verbatim from the Hebrew Wikisource transcription; the standard modern English translation (Kaplan, 1979) is under copyright.

Go, say to the Nasi: for all the guardians of the six palace gates there is permission to mention their names and to touch upon them; but as for the guardians of the gate of the seventh palace, from the mere report of them a man is terrified. How could he touch upon them? For each and every one of them, his name is called by the name of the King of the world. And I have not expounded them until now. Since you say to me, expound: come and stand upon your feet, every one of you, and when his name goes forth from my mouth, kneel and fall upon your faces. At once all the mighty ones of the company and all the great ones of the academy came and stood upon their feet before Rabbi Nehunya ben ha-Kanah, and the scribes were writing, and they were falling.

These are the names of the guardians of the gate of the seventh palace, the roster of the ascent: CHURPANI’EL, ZAHAFTARIAI, YHWH God of Israel, prince honoured and desirable and terrible; AVIRZAHIAI, KAVFA’EL, YHWH, prince desirable, honoured and terrible; ATRAGI’EL, YHWH; CHATRUGI’EL; BANGA’EL, YHWH, prince honoured and desirable and terrible and alarming and precious and glorified and mighty and majestic; SASTITI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured and desirable and terrible and alarming and precious and glorified and mighty and majestic and strong; ANAFI’EL, YHWH, prince desirable, terrible and alarming and precious and glorified and mighty and majestic and strong, whose name is called to mind before the throne of his glory three times each and every day in the height, from the day the world was created until now, for praise. And why? Because the signet-ring of the seal of heaven and the seal of earth is delivered into his hand.

And as soon as all who are in the height see him, they kneel and fall upon their faces and prostrate themselves before him, which is not done otherwise in the height. And should you say, before the Prince of the Presence they bow: not so, except for those who stand before the throne of glory, who do not bow to the Prince of the Presence; but before ANAFI’EL the prince they bow willingly and by permission. ATRATAS the great master, AFIMI’EL SHAMAH BARTZA, YHWH God of Israel.

These are the names of the gate of the seventh palace, of the descent, which are those whose names I distinguished: TOFI’EL and LAVI’EL of the ascent; TARPI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured, desirable and terrible, who was called AVIRZAHAI, YHWH; DALKUKI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured and desirable and terrible, who was called LAVAVPI’EL, YHWH; YAKRI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured, desirable and terrible, who was called ATRIGI’EL, YHWH; YESHISHI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured, desirable and terrible, who was called BANANA, YHWH; TARPI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured, desirable and terrible, who was called ZOHALI’EL, YHWH; ANAFI’EL, ANAFI’EL, YHWH, prince honoured and desirable and terrible, who was called SHUFSI’EL, YHWH, strong, upright and mighty.

And why is his name called ANAFI’EL? Because of the branch of the crown of crowns that is set upon his head, which covers and conceals all the chambers of the palace of Aravot Raqia, like the Former of creation. Just as of the Former of creation a verse is written, “His splendour covered the heavens” (Habakkuk 3:3), so too of ANAFI’EL the prince, a servant who is called by the name of his master. And why is he more beloved than all the guardians of the six palace gates? Because he opens the gate of the seventh palace. And two hundred and ninety-six faces are in all the holy living creatures over against the gate of the seventh palace.
