Psyche ψυχή

Psyche (ψυχή), soul. Nineteen occurrences in the Naassene report, concentrated in Refutatio 5.7, where it becomes the controlling term.

What the soul is for, in this report

The Naassene account as Hippolytus gives it makes a claim about the soul that a reader raised on later Christian usage will not expect, and the translation must not soften it. A soul is given to the moulded figure so that it may suffer and be punished — “so that through the soul the moulded thing of the great and most beautiful and perfect Man might suffer and be punished in its enslavement.”

Soul here is the instrument by which the Man above is held captive. It is not the divine spark and not the thing to be saved; on this account it is closer to the mechanism of the trap.

The report then says the group determined the soul’s nature not from the scriptures but from the mystery rites, and that the soul is “very hard to find out and hard to understand, for it does not remain always in the same shape or the same form.”

Rendering

Hekhal renders psyche “soul” and never “spirit”. This corpus holds psyche and pneuma apart as a graded pair, and collapsing them destroys the doctrine the grading exists to express. “Life” is available for the animating-principle sense but is not used in the 5.7 material, where the doctrinal sense is continuous.
