Psychikos ψυχικός

Psychikos (ψυχικός), formed from psyche, soul. In the Naassene report it is the middle term of a graded triad, though the triad’s outer terms are not stable: Refutatio 5.6.6 gives intellectual / ensouled / earthy, and 5.6.7 gives angelic / ensouled / earthy for the kinds and the churches alike. Only the middle term holds still.

Two forbidden renderings, for two different reasons

“Psychic” is forbidden as a false friend. The English word carries a modern sense of paranormal perception that has nothing to do with the Greek and would make a sober anthropological term sound occult.

“Natural” is forbidden for a subtler and more important reason. It is the traditional English of psychikos at 1 Corinthians 2:14, and the relationship between this triad and Pauline vocabulary is one of the live disputed questions about the Naassene material. Rendering the word here with the standard Pauline English silently answers that question in one direction. Hekhal uses “ensouled”, which is unidiomatic precisely because it is uncommitted.
