Heikhalot Rabbati 20: The Recall of Rabbi Nehunya
Heikhalot Rabbati · The Greater Palaces
This edition presents the verbatim Hebrew of the passage beside a fresh English rendering and a critical apparatus. It is a provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor.
The apparatus carries a running commentary, notes on the controlled vocabulary and the rendering chosen for each term, any doctrinally-live ambiguity preserved with both readings, and cross-references to the lexicon. The Hebrew is reproduced verbatim from the Hebrew Wikisource transcription; the standard modern English translation (Kaplan, 1979) is under copyright.
Rabbi Ishmael said: at once I took a cloth of fine wool, thin as a blossom, and gave it to Rabbi Akiva, and Rabbi Akiva gave it to our servant, saying: Go and set this cloth beside a woman who had immersed and whose immersion did not count for her, and let her immerse again; for if that woman should come and declare the manner of her period before the company, it is known that one forbids and the majority permit. They said to that woman: touch this cloth with the tip of the middle finger of your hand, and do not press the tip of the finger upon it, but as a person who takes a speck out of the ball of his eye, which has fallen in, and dislodges it with a mere motion.
They went and did so, and set the cloth before Rabbi Ishmael. He fixed into it a twig of myrtle full of balsam-oil that had been steeped in pure balsam, and they laid it upon the knees of Rabbi Nehunya ben ha-Kanah. At once they dismissed him from before the throne of glory, where he had been sitting and beholding the wondrous pride and the majesty unlike any other, the pride of exaltedness and the majesty of radiance, which surge before the throne of glory three times each and every day in the merkavah, from the creation of the world until now, for praise.
And we asked him: who is “of those who descend to the merkavah” and who is “not of those who descend to the merkavah”? He said to us: These are men whom the descenders to the merkavah would take and station above themselves and seat before them, saying to them: Gaze and see and give ear and write down everything that I say and everything that we hear from before the throne of glory. And those men are not fit for this, and therefore the guardians of the gate of the sixth palace struck them. Be careful to choose for yourselves worthy men, tested companions.
When you come and stand at the gate of the sixth palace, show the three seals of the guardians of the gate of the sixth palace to QATZPI’EL the prince, whose sword is drawn in his hand, and lightnings dart and go forth from it, and it is set against everyone who is not fit to look upon the King and the throne; and there is no creature that can stay his hand. And his drawn sword cries out and says: ruin and destruction! at the lintel of the right.
And one to DUMI’EL. And is DUMI’EL his name? Is not ABIR GAHIDRI’EM his name? Why then is he called DUMI’EL? Rabbi Ishmael said: thus said Rabbi Nehunya ben ha-Kanah: Every day a heavenly voice goes forth from Aravot Raqia and proclaims and says: thus do they say in the court above — TA’UM and BAR MENATZEH ZAFUKHI GASHASH GA’ASHAT, YHWH God of Israel, called him DUMI’EL after My own name; and what I see I keep silent, and so, DUMI’EL. He holds authority of Mine at the lintel of the right, and he is together with QATZPI’EL the prince, and there is between them neither enmity nor hatred nor jealousy nor rivalry, but these are for My honour and these are for My honour.
