About Heikhalot Rabbati 21: The Seals, the Gift, and Who May Descend

Heikhalot Rabbati 21 completes the sixth-gate procedure and then states, in one sentence, who is permitted to make the ascent at all.

The named seals are distributed to named guardians, and the chapter says outright what a seal is for: its bearer is not questioned at the first palace, nor the second, nor the third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh — he shows his seal and enters. QATZPI'EL, who a chapter earlier held a drawn sword against the unfit, now bends his bow and conveys the traveller onward in a chariot of radiance with horns and shofars and trumpets sounded before him in myriads. DUMI'EL carries a gift before him, and the text pauses to define its own term: not a gift of silver or of gold, but the standing of passing unquestioned. Danger and honour are the same gate seen from either side of the credential.

The final section is the chapter's weight. "The one who descends to the merkavah is only he in whom these two qualities are found": complete command of the written and oral curriculum — Torah, Prophets and Writings, mishnayot, halakhot and aggadot, and the resolution of the halakhot of the forbidden and the permitted — and complete observance of the whole Torah given to Moses at Sinai. No lineage is required and no shortcut is offered. This bears directly on a live scholarly disagreement about who produced this literature, since the ascent here is gated by the full rabbinic curriculum rather than offered as an alternative to acquiring it. The apparatus sets out that tension and declines to resolve it.

canonical late antique / post-talmudic redaction; pseudepigraphically Tannaitic Hebrew Anonymous (pseudepigraphically ascribed to R. Ishmael and R. Nehunya ben ha-Kanah) tr. Hekhal Targum Project (machine-assisted, provisional)

This edition presents the verbatim Hebrew of the passage beside a fresh English rendering and a critical apparatus. It is a provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor.

The apparatus carries a running commentary, notes on the controlled vocabulary and the rendering chosen for each term, any doctrinally-live ambiguity preserved with both readings, and cross-references to the lexicon. The Hebrew is reproduced verbatim from the Hebrew Wikisource transcription; the standard modern English translation (Kaplan, 1979) is under copyright.

ZAHARARI’EL and PA’ALEI PE’ALAV: these two seals let a man show to QATZPI’EL, and BARUNIH let him show to DUMI’EL the prince, a prince upright and wronged. At once QATZPI’EL the prince bends his bow and sneezes, and brings you a storm wind, and seats you in a chariot of radiance, and there are sounded before you the measure of eight thousand myriad horns and three thousand myriad shofars and four thousand myriad trumpets; and DUMI’EL the prince takes hold of a gift and goes before you.

And what is the gift? Rabbi Ishmael said: thus said Rabbi Nehunya ben ha-Kanah: My master, this gift that DUMI’EL the prince takes hold of, and goes before the carriage of that man who is worthy and descends to the merkavah, is not a gift of silver or of gold. Rather, they account it a merit to that man: they did not question him, not at the first palace nor at the second palace nor at the third palace nor at the fourth palace nor at the fifth palace nor at the sixth palace nor at the seventh palace; rather he shows them his seal and they let him be, and he enters.

And at the gate of the sixth palace, DUMI’EL the prince, the guardian of the threshold of the right side of the gate of the sixth palace, sits upon a bench of pure yatuk-stone, in which is the radiance of the lights of the firmament as at the creation of the world, ADASTAN and IRAN, ADASTAR and KHAFINU, SHEMANUSH, AKHSHANEH, YHWH God of Israel. And DUMI’EL the prince receives him with a gracious countenance, and seats him upon the bench of pure yatuk-stone, and sits beside him at his right hand.

And he would say: two things I testify and warn before you. The one who descends to the merkavah is only he in whom these two qualities are found: one who has read and repeated Torah, Prophets and Writings, and repeats mishnayot and halakhot and aggadot and the resolution of the halakhot of the forbidden and the permitted; and one who has kept the whole Torah entire, and observes all the prohibitions and all the statutes and the judgments and the teachings that were said to Moses at Sinai.
