About Sefer ha-Bahir § 75 -- the two tzedeks and the tzedek that terrifies the righteous

Sefer ha-Bahir § 75 reads the doubled word of Deuteronomy 16:20, "justice, justice (tzedek tzedek) you shall pursue," as naming two distinct grades. The first is "tzedek proper," identified outright with the Shekhinah (Isaiah 1:21, "tzedek lodges in her") -- Tzedek being a standard name of the indwelling presence, later Malkhut. The second is "the tzedek that terrifies the righteous," the stern, judging face. The passage thus hears, in one repeated word, the Shekhinah's twofold aspect: mercy and severe judgment.

A prooftext chain then lifts tzedek above tzedakah (charitable giving): tzedakah is worn "as a breastplate" while tzedek is "a helmet of salvation on the head" (Isaiah 59:17), and the head is truth (Psalm 119:160), and truth is peace (Isaiah 39:8). It closes on Hezekiah's saying about "the measure (middah) You gave to David my father" -- the grade of David, the kingship, the Shekhinah -- and David's throne "like the sun."

The doubled “justice, justice (tzedek tzedek)” of Deuteronomy 16:20 read as two grades: the first identified with the Shekhinah, the second “the tzedek that terrifies the righteous” — the merciful and the severe faces of one presence. A prooftext chain then lifts tzedek above tzedakah (the head, truth, peace), closing on the measure given to David and his throne “like the sun.”

And what is ‘justice, justice (tzedek tzedek)’ (Deuteronomy 16:20), [said] twice? He said to him: as it is written (Psalm 18:13), ‘from the brightness before Him.’ The first tzedek is tzedek proper, and she is the Shekhinah, as it is written (Isaiah 1:21), ‘tzedek lodges in her.’ And what is the second tzedek? This is the tzedek that terrifies the righteous. And is this tzedek ‘tzedakah’ (righteous giving) or not? No. And what is the reason? As it is written (Isaiah 59:17), ‘and he put on tzedakah as a breastplate’ — while tzedek is ‘a helmet of salvation on his head’ (ibid.); and ‘his head’ is nothing but truth, as it is said (Psalm 119:160), ‘the head of Your word is truth’; and ‘truth’ is nothing but peace, as it is said (Isaiah 39:8), ‘for there shall be peace and truth in my days.’ Is it possible for a man to say such a thing? Rather, thus said Hezekiah: that measure which You gave to David my father is half my days, and peace and truth are half my days. Therefore he mentioned ‘my days’ and mentioned ‘peace and truth’; and ‘in my days’ — for all is one. This is what is written, ‘peace’: (Genesis 1:5) ‘and there was evening and there was morning, one day’ — just as the day is peace, so he too sought peace, as it is said (2 Kings 20:19), ‘peace and truth shall be in my days,’ by that measure which You gave to David my father, as it is written (Psalm 89:37), ‘and his throne is like the sun before Him.’
