Hylikos ὑλικός

Hylikos (ὑλικός), from hylē, matter. Conventionally the lowest of the three gnostic classes — and in this report, conventionally is not how it behaves.

Four configurations, not one triad

The Naassene report gives four distinct arrangements of its graded classes across two chapters, and hylikos appears in only one of them:

Only at 5.8.22 does hylikos appear, and there it stands beside choikos rather than instead of it: those far off are the material and those of dust, those near are the spiritual and intellective. So the two are not synonyms in this text, and a translation that renders both “material” destroys a distinction the report is drawing.

Hekhal renders each configuration distinctly rather than standardising to the familiar triad, because the variation is evidence about how the report was assembled.

Rendering

“Material”, never “hylic” (an unhelpful transliteration) and never “fleshly” — the latter belongs to sarkikos, which the report uses against pneumatikos at 5.7.40 and 5.8.18. That clash is formally declared in the engine’s collision registry: both renderings are correct for their own terms, and they must stay apart.
