Naas νάας

Naas (νάας) is not a Greek word. It is Hebrew naḥash, serpent, carried into Greek and left there, and it is the word from which the group Hippolytus reports in Refutatio 5.6-5.11 takes its name. The report says so itself: the priests and champions of the doctrine were first those called Naassenes, so named in the Hebrew tongue: for naas is what the serpent is called.

Hekhal keeps naas untranslated wherever it appears, with the Greek ophis carrying “serpent” beside it. The reason is not delicacy about proper names. Render naas as “serpent” and the report’s own etymological sentence collapses into “for serpent is what the serpent is called” — the derivation disappears, and with it the reader’s ability to see why an etymology is being given at all.

Why the word matters more than its meaning

A Semitic loanword preserved inside a Greek heresiological report is one of very few hard data points bearing on the linguistic milieu of whoever composed the underlying document. Most of what can be said about the Naassenes is inference from a hostile summary. This is a word.

It should be handled carefully all the same. The etymology is supplied by the reporter, not by the group in its own voice, and what it establishes directly is that Hippolytus or his source knew the Hebrew word. That the group knew it, or named itself from it, is a further inference the sentence invites but does not prove.

Cross-tradition resonance

• Nachash (jewish-mysticism) — the Hebrew source of the loan; the serpent of Genesis 3, and the object of a considerable Jewish interpretive literature that this Greek report does not cite.
• Ophis (gnostic-tradition) — the Greek equivalent, supplied as a gloss in the same clause. The pairing of a foreign term with its native gloss is characteristic of how this report handles technical vocabulary.
