hyper-prefix

Active frame controller: kataphatic-apophatic. The triple ὑπερ- (ὑπερούσιε / ὑπέρθεε / ὑπεράγαθε) performs the signature Dionysian move of affirming a kataphatic name only to negate it by excess. hyperagnoston-hyperphaes

The pairing ‘unknown-beyond-unknowing / brilliant-beyond-light’ establishes the dazzling-darkness (γνόφος) topos that organizes the whole treatise. The summit (κορυφή) is simultaneously maximal luminosity and maximal unknowing — kataphatic-apophatic coincidence, not synthesis. Turner, Denys 1995, p. 19-49

logia

τὰ μυστικὰ λόγια in the CD = Scripture under its hidden/apophatic aspect. The summit is reached not apart from the scriptural words but through their mystical (i.e. hidden-symbolic) reading. Rorem, Paul 1993, p. 184-186

Editorial decisions

• hyper-prefix. Render ὑπερ- as ‘beyond’ rather than ‘super-’ across the chunk to preserve the apophatic operation; document the Latin ‘super-essentialis’ reception in ambiguity amb-hyper-prefix-scope. (editor-targum, 2025-01-15)

Selected sense: beyond being / super-essential

Active senses: beyond being, super-essential, transcending substance, above-ousia

Rationale: Dionysius’ signature ὑπερ- prefix marks apophatic transcendence of a kataphatic predicate (ousia). ‘Beyond being’ preserves the operation of negation-by-excess rather than collapsing to ‘super-essential’ (which the Latin tradition fixed but obscures the apophatic move).

Rationale: In the CD theosophia denotes the revealed wisdom transmitted through Scripture (ta logia) and hierarchy, distinct from philosophical sophia. Retained as ‘theosophy’ to preserve the technical Dionysian register.

Rendering: O Trinity, super-essential, and super-God, and super-good, Guardian of the Divine wisdom of Christian men, direct us aright to the super-unknown and super-brilliant and highest summit of the mystic Oracles.

Agreement: substantial — Parker uses ‘super-’ for ὑπερ-, which preserves the prefix’s morphology but reads in the eminence-key (Reading B of amb-hyper-prefix-scope). The present translation prefers ‘beyond’ to foreground the apophatic operation.

Rendering: Trinity, which exceedeth all Being, Deity, and Goodness! Thou that instructeth Christians in Thy heavenly wisdom! Guide us to that topmost height of mystic lore which exceedeth light and more than exceedeth knowledge.

Agreement: substantial — Rolt paraphrases freely and reorders clauses; ‘exceedeth’ captures the apophatic excess but loses the morphological rhyme of the triple ὑπερ-.
