Did the world begin, made out of nothing by a willing God (the Torah, defended by Maimonides as at least rationally possible), or is it eternal, proceeding by necessity from its cause (the Aristotelians)? And can reason decide at all, or only revelation? The Jewish form of the same fault-line the falasifa and al-Ghazali fought over.
