Does the world emanate eternally and necessarily from the Necessary Existent (the falasifa), or was it created in time and out of nothing by God's free will (al-Ghazali)? Davidson frames the stake exactly: eternity implies a deity bereft of will, a beginning a deity possessed of will. The fault-line between an eternal source and a willing Creator.
