Did God make the world out of nothing, freely and at a beginning, leaving it wholly other than Himself (the Fathers), or does all proceed from God and return to Him in a procession that reads creation as theophany (Eriugena)? The Christian form of the same fault-line, with the Neoplatonic inheritance pulling toward emanation against the patristic ex nihilo.
