This chunk is the scaffolded Targum-translated form of sefer-yetzirah.1.1-2.scaffolded. It was drafted by the Hekhal Targum Project on 2026-05-09 using glossary revision kabbalah-v0.3 with the pardes frame controller firing. The Kabbalah controlled glossary supplied 13 forbidden / selected term constraints; the PaRDeS controller supplied the four interpretive senses (peshat / remez / derash / sod), the five doctrinal relations (layered / ascent / hidden / gematria / shekhinah), and three output validators (including sefirot-not-substituted, which forbids replacing biblical divine epithets with sefirotic names in the body).

By thirty-two wondrous paths of wisdom did Yah, YHVH of Hosts, God of Israel, the Living God and King of the universe, El Shaddai, merciful and gracious, high and exalted, dwelling-forever and holy is His Name, engrave [His world] — and He created His world by three books (sefarim): by writ (sefer), by number (sefar), and by telling (sippur). Ten sefirot of nothingness (beli mah), and twenty-two foundational letters: three mothers, seven doubles, and twelve simples.

PaRDeS layered: peshat counts thirty-two paths; sod identifies them as 10 sefirot + 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, the basic generative inventory of Sefer Yetzirah’s cosmogony. The number 32 = gematria of lev (לב, ‘heart’), generating the medieval reading that Wisdom inscribes through the ‘heart’ of creation. The gematria is exegetically operative in the later commentary tradition (Raavad, Ramak) and is surfaced in apparatus per the controller’s gematria relation. Hayman, A. sefer-sefar-sippur

PaRDeS remez: the triad sefer / sefar / sippur shares the root s-p-r with sefirot, performing a paronomastic identification of cosmic inscription with the ten sefirot announced in the next sentence. The triad is variously read as text/number/narrative (Saadia), or as the three dimensions of language (writing, counting, speaking). The wordplay is the chief exegetical engine of §§ 1-2 and is preserved in the body via parenthetical transliteration rather than collapsed into English. PaRDeS sod: ‘beli mah’ (literally ‘without what’) is the proto-apophatic qualifier that marks the sefirot as emanations grounded in no-thing. The phrase is preserved in transliteration in the body because every English rendering (‘ineffable,’ ‘abstract,’ ‘of nothingness,’ ‘closed-mouthed’ per the witty medieval pun beli-mah / b’limah / ‘bridled’) foreshortens the term. ten-divine-names

PaRDeS shekhinah-relation: the chunk lists ten epithets of God (יה / יהוה צבאות / אלהי ישראל / אלהים חיים / מלך עולם / אל שדי / רחום וחנון / רם ונשא / שוכן עד / קדוש שמו) as the agent of the engraving. The Kabbalistic reception (Bahir, Zohar, Ramak) maps these ten names onto the ten sefirot: a self-referential structure in which the divine names that engrave the thirty-two paths are themselves the ten sefirot among those paths. Peshat: the 22 Hebrew letters are classified into three ‘mothers’ (אמש — aleph, mem, shin = three primary elements air/water/fire), seven ‘doubles’ (בגדכפרת — letters that take dagesh = seven planets / seven days), and twelve ‘simples’ (the remainder = twelve zodiacal signs / months). sefirot

Selected sense: emanations. Active senses also include ‘configured aspects of the divine,’ ‘the ten,’ and the archaic-stratum sense ‘numbered enumerations / countings of cosmic structure.’ Rationale: in Sefer Yetzirah’s earliest stratum the sefirot are not yet the fully theosophical ten of post-Bahir Kabbalah; the term plays on s-p-r (count/recount/write) as the immediately preceding triad shows. Nonetheless ‘emanations’ is selected to preserve continuity with the controlled glossary, and because the qualifier ‘beli mah’ already pushes the sefirot beyond bare counting into apophatic ontology. Selected sense: secret. Although the term sod does not appear lexically in this chunk, the passage is the foundational sod-text of the Kabbalistic tradition: ‘beli mah’ encodes the apophatic ground of the sefirot, and the thirty-two paths are the canonical sod-mapping of cosmic structure. Agreement substantial. Westcott’s Theosophical-era rendering collapses sefer/sefar/sippur into ‘Numbers, Letters, and Sounds,’ which is interpretively defensible but loses the s-p-r wordplay with sefirot. Also renders ‘engrave his name’ (importing ‘name’) where the Hebrew has only ‘engrave.’ Westcott, W. W. 1887

Stenring 1923 (PD)

“In thirty-two paths of secret wisdom did Jah, the Lord of Hosts… establish his creation by three Sepharim, namely: 1) S’fer; 2) Sephar; and 3) Sippur.”

Agreement substantial. Stenring preserves the transliterated triad (good) but adds ‘secret’ to ‘wisdom’ (פליאות = ‘wondrous,’ not ‘secret’), importing sod into peshat where the Hebrew does not warrant. Stenring, Knut 1923

Kalisch 1877 (PD)

Agreement substantial. Kalisch’s parenthetical ‘(formed and created the world)’ supplies the elided object of haqaq, a defensible peshat move but collapses the elided-object ambiguity that this rendering preserves. Kalisch, Isidor 1877

Cross-tradition resonances

Apophatic-priority resonance: ‘beli mah’ is the proto-apophatic seed from which the Kabbalistic Ein Sof discourse later grows; the structurally analogous moves in adjacent traditions are the Akbarian ahadiyya (the divine in its non-relational register, prior to all names) and the Christian apophatic hyperousios (beyond-being). The three terms together name a cross-tradition triangle of apophatic priority that operates as one of Hekhal’s strongest editorial cross-tradition links.

Intertextual: the Bahir’s elaboration of the ten ma’amarot / sefirot presupposes and reworks Sefer Yetzirah’s enumeration. The thirty-two paths are then carried forward into the diagrammatic Kabbalah’s Tree of Life (10 sefirot + 22 paths between them) and the Lurianic four-worlds schema.
