Reason and revelation

Athens and Jerusalem: are reason and revelation one harmonious truth, or does the revealed word stand above, and sometimes against, the philosophers?

This is the meta-fault-line, the one that governs how every other dispute is conducted: when creation, the attributes, or free will are in question, do you settle it by demonstration or by the revealed text? One side answers that reason and revelation are two roads to a single truth, which cannot contradict itself; demonstrative reason therefore has real authority, may interpret scripture where a proof requires, and perfects rather than threatens the faith. The other answers that revelation stands above reason, which is at most its servant and at worst its enemy, and that where they seem to part, or on what reason cannot reach, the revealed word and the living God of the covenant have the final say. Athens and Jerusalem: partners, or rivals. Each tradition fought it to the edge of anathema, ban, and the burning of books, and each carried the genealogy of the others, for Averroes shaped both Aquinas and the Jewish rationalists.

Harmony (reason)

Reason and revelation are two roads to one truth, which cannot contradict itself; demonstrative reason has genuine authority, may interpret scripture where a proof requires, and perfects the faith. Averroes, the Maimonidean rationalists, and the Thomist synthesis stand here.

Revelation above reason

Revelation stands above reason, which is at most its servant and at worst its enemy; where the two part, or on what reason cannot reach, the revealed word and the living God of faith have the final say. Al-Ghazali and the traditionalists, the anti-Maimonideans and Halevi, and Tertullian stand toward here.

Where this fork appears

The same conceptual fork, instantiated in disputes that look unrelated on the surface. Each carries its own break-point: the place where the rhyme stops. No reading is adjudicated, here or on the pages linked.

Islamic philosophy (falsafa)

Do philosophy and revelation form one harmonious truth, so that the elite may interpret scripture by demonstration where the two seem to part (Averroes), or does philosophy serve under revelation, failing on the gravest questions and never its judge (al-Ghazali)? The Islamic form of the fork between reason and revelation, with the traditionalists rejecting the speculative claim of both.

break-point The Islamic instance: Averroes' harmony (philosophy enjoined, the elite interpret by taʾwil) against al-Ghazali's subordination (philosophy serves but does not judge revelation). Break-point: Averroes' two-meanings solution (a demonstrative reading for the elite, the apparent sense for the masses) is a distinctively Islamic move that the Jewish and Christian instances do not share in the same legal form.

Jewish philosophy

Is philosophy the inner meaning of the Torah, so that reason perfects the faith (the Maimonideans), or a Greek corruption that denies miracles, naturalizes prophecy, and loosens observance, to be banned from the young (the anti-Maimonideans)? The Jewish form of the fork between reason and revelation, fought to the point of bans and the burning of the Guide; Halevi's counter-philosophy is a third path.

break-point The Jewish instance, fought to the burning of the Guide: the Maimonidean harmony (philosophy is the inner meaning of the Torah) against the anti-Maimonidean ban (philosophy corrupts faith and observance), with Halevi's counter-philosophy as a third path. Break-point: Halevi's claim that philosophy misses the God of Abraham rather than merely corrupting Him is a third position, neither harmony nor prohibition, sharper here than elsewhere.

Christian philosophy

Is the philosophy of Athens the enemy of the faith of Jerusalem, breeding heresy and to be kept out (Tertullian), or its partner, since reason and revelation both come from God and cannot conflict, so that reason demonstrates the preambles and serves theology (Clement and Aquinas)? The Christian form of the fork between reason and revelation.

break-point The Christian instance: Tertullian's separation ('what has Athens to do with Jerusalem?') against the synthesis of Clement and Aquinas (reason demonstrates the preambles and serves theology). Break-point: the synthesis here separates what reason can prove (that God is) from what only faith holds (the Trinity), a precise division of labor the Islamic and Jewish disputes drew differently.

On what authority this axis is drawn

Attested in the comparative literature. The relation of reason and revelation is the central shared topic of medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian philosophy, and the three are genuinely connected: Averroes (Hourani 1961) shaped both the Latin scholastics and the Jewish Aristotelians, and the Maimonidean Controversy (Silver 1965) is in part a reception of the falsafa. The cross-tradition co-location rests on this documented common topic and its genealogical links.

This axis is itself a claim, held to the same standard as the positions it gathers. If you hold one of these disputes and think it does not belong on this fork, that objection is welcome and will be recorded: contest it here.
