Sefer ha-Bahir 57-60 -- the seven days, the souls, and heaven
Sefer ha-Bahir · The Book of Brilliance
canonical late 12th c., Provence (ascribed to the 1st c. tanna) Hebrew Anonymous (attributed to Rabbi Nehunya ben ha-Kanah) tr. Hekhal Targum Project (machine-assisted draft; pending scholarly review)
The seven, the souls, and the making of heaven. Isaiah’s “light of the seven days” as the six vessels of creation plus the Sabbath, which “sustains all the souls” (§ 57); from there the souls fly forth, and the covenant is cut with Abraham (§ 58); heaven (shamayim) as fire and water kneaded together — the peace between them, Tiferet holding Ḥesed and Gevurah, sealed with a prayer for peace and love (§ 59); and the seven righteous judgments of Psalm 119, left for the reader to find (§ 60).
A provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor. The Hebrew is reproduced verbatim (including its citation of the verse as Psalm 119:144, where the verse is at 119:164, flagged in the text); the standard modern English translation (Kaplan, 1979) is under copyright.
What is written (Isaiah 30:26), ‘and the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days’? ‘The days’ — it should have said ‘days’; rather, those days of which it is written (Exodus 31:17), ‘for [in] six days the LORD made [the heavens and the earth].’ His fellow said to him: and so I have received, from what is written, ‘for six days the LORD made’ — as you say, six fine vessels the Holy One made. And what are they? ‘the heavens and the earth.’ But behold, they are seven! And so it is written (ibid.), ‘and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed (va-yinafash).’ What is ‘va-yinafash’? It teaches that the Sabbath day sustains all the souls (nefashot), as it is said, ‘and He was refreshed (va-yinafash).’

Another interpretation: it teaches that from there the souls fly forth, as it is said, ‘and He was refreshed (va-yinafash)’ — until a thousand generations, as it is said (Psalm 105:8), ‘the word He commanded to a thousand generations,’ and adjacent to it (ibid. 9), ‘which He made with Abraham.’ And what is ‘which He made (asher karat)’? He cut a covenant (brit) with him — between the ten fingers of his hands and the ten fingers of his feet. Abraham was ashamed. The Holy One said to him: I — behold, My covenant is with you (Genesis 17:4), and through it you shall be father of a multitude of nations.

And what is ‘heaven (shamayim)’? It teaches that the Holy One kneaded fire (esh) and water (mayim) and beat them one into the other, and made from them the head of His word, as it is written (Psalm 119:160), ‘the head of Your word is truth.’ And this is [the meaning of] ‘shamayim’: ‘sham mayim (there is water),’ [that is] ‘esh u-mayim (fire and water).’ He said to him: up to here [is] ‘He makes peace in His heights’ — He set peace and love between them; may He set between us peace and love.

And further we say (Psalm 119:144 in the source; the verse is at 119:164), ‘seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous judgments (mishpetei tzidkekha).’ They said to him: what are they? He said to them: you did not examine my words; go out and examine them, and you will find them.

This edition sets the verbatim Hebrew beside a fresh English rendering and a critical apparatus: a running commentary on the passage, notes on the controlled vocabulary and the rendering chosen for each term, and cross-references to the lexicon and to related sections. It is a provisional scholarly draft, released openly for correction and not yet reviewed by a credentialed editor.
Controlled terms noted in this passage: tzedek (rendered as righteousness). For each, the apparatus carries the sense set and the reason for the rendering chosen.
⁂
the seven days, the six vessels, and the souls
Isaiah 30:26’s ‘light of the seven days’ (with the definite article) is read as the days of Genesis (Exodus 31:17, ‘six days the LORD made’): the Holy One made ‘six fine vessels’ — ‘the heavens and the earth’ — and, since that makes seven with the seventh day, ‘and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed (va-yinafash).’ The Sabbath ‘sustains all the souls (nefashot).’ Sod: the six vessels are the six directions, the six lower grades of construction (Ḥesed through Yesod); the seventh, the Sabbath, is the receiving grade (Malkhut) that gathers and sustains the souls.
the flight of the souls and the covenant with Abraham
’Va-yinafash’ re-read: from there the souls fly forth, ‘to a thousand generations’ (Psalm 105:8), a verse the Bahir joins to its neighbor, ‘which He made (karat) with Abraham’ (105:9). ‘Which He cut’ is the covenant (brit) with Abraham — ‘between the ten fingers of his hands and the ten of his feet’ — an allusion to circumcision and to the ten grades; Genesis 17:4, ‘My covenant is with you, father of a multitude.’ Sod: the source of the souls; the covenant of circumcision as the sign at the foundation (Yesod), and the ten fingers as the ten sefirot.
heaven as fire and water; the peace between them
The name shamayim (שמים, ‘heaven’) is unfolded: the Holy One kneaded fire (esh) and water (mayim) and beat them together into ‘the head of His word’ (Psalm 119:160) — so ‘shamayim’ is heard as ‘sham mayim’ (there is water) and as ‘esh u-mayim’ (fire and water). The making of peace between fire and water is the reconciling center, Tiferet, holding Ḥesed (water) and Gevurah (fire): the same peace figured by Michael and Gabriel (§§ 11-12) and by the voice that ‘hews flames of fire’ (§ 45). The passage closes on a prayer — ‘may He set between us peace and love.‘
the seven praises
Psalm 119:164 (‘seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous judgments’) is left as a challenge: the seven are not named — ‘you did not examine my words; go and examine them, and you will find them.’ The seven are the recurring seven of the Bahir: the seven voices, the seven lower grades, the seven days.
tzedek
Selected sense: righteousness
Active senses: righteousness
Rationale: The match is on ‘tzidkekha’ (Your righteousness / righteous, in ‘mishpetei tzidkekha,’ Your righteous judgments) in the § 60 prooftext, Psalm 119:164, rendered plainly ‘righteous’ — the ordinary sense, not the grade-name here; noted so the controlled term is accounted for.
